Birthday Traditions | Piggy Bank Savings

Last year,one of Sophia’s birthday gifts was a piggy bank from my Aunt Carolyn.  Ever since it’s arrival, we’ve been dumping our extra change, as well as any monetary gifts she was given, into the cute little pig. 


Sophia really likes to put the change in, so the morning of her birthday, we put a few last minute coins in and took it to the bank. 



I’m pretty sure we were the most annoying people eer to walk into the bank.  I thought it would be more fun to let Sophia watch us empty the pig into the change machine, but shaking coins out of a ceramic bank into a change machine that filters coins is ridiculously loud.  It took five loooong  and loud minutes. 


Parents beware:  If you donate all of your quarters to your children, you may be surprised to find out how much money you are giving away.  Apparently, without even filling it completely, there was $78 in that little pig! 

We’ll be opening  a savings account for Sophia with her new found fortune and emptying the pig into it every year on her birthday.

   We thought that once she’s five, or so, we’d give her the option to spend a little if she wants, but whatever she decides to put into the bank on that day, we’ll double.  Hopefully, that will motivate her to save at least some of it rather than spend all of it (like her Mommy would have!).

It looks like she may already have the idea of hanging onto her own money.  Dan asked her, jokingly of course, if she wanted to use her money to send Daddy golfing, to which she replied, “No.  My money.”
