Making Elmo Cute(r)…

Wednesday, June 29, 2011

I’m not a giant fan of the little red guy, but Sophia is.  It started with a few small birthday gifts and then she was very interested in who the little monster on her diapers was (we use Pampers).  At that point, Elmo was just synonymous with diaper – no big deal.  I would have been fine skipping out on him altogether, but one weekend when I was away Daddy introduced the digital version of Elmo on YouTube and she’s been hooked ever since.

I saw an ad in Pregnancy and Newborn magazine yesterday for vintage t-shirts that read something like – We’ve all sworn our child would not wear (fill in licensed character here) clothing, but then your child’s love for said character endeared you toward him just a little bit…

That’s how I feel about Elmo.  He’s so much cuter now that Sophia is so in love with him.  Thankfully, so far, we’re still stuck on YouTube and not so much TV shows.   She doesn’t have patience for sitting in front of the TV anyway, so why encourage that addiction early?

Early in the spring we were at Barnes and Noble - she found two stuffed Elmo’s and proceeded to carry one under each arm for the remainder of the trip.  Somehow, we ended up leaving the store that day with a $16 Elmo.  Ridiculous, right?  But, she was SO happy!  Not to mention how fun it is that Elmo’s giant mouth can hold a paci – something Sophia finds hilarious.  :)

Recently, at Old Navy, I came across a table of really cute vintage styled t-shirts.

And, really, if you’re gonna put your babe in an Elmo shirt – this is the one.  It makes me crazy that I find the shirt absolutely adorable.  :)

Any characters you’d rather keep out of YOUR house?

We keep them all out. Before Malone was born, we decided we were going to be hardcore about the no character thing until Malone make a reasonable well thought out argument about why said character item should come into our house.

It drives me bonkers that kids are marketed to and pushed to consumerism before birth (which is our reasoning).

There are a few characters that he really likes (Thomas, Chugginton, and Fireman Sam) but he is happy to visit with them at the store. It's super hard to keep them out- there are characters on everything (diapers, wipe boxes, food, clothes, etc). It's made us really mindful of our purchases.

We've made our views around this clear to family and friends and for the most part they do really well. I only have to return one gift from his past birthday.
